Approach

Defined by what is removed.

Extreme minimalism is the idea. It is how the buildings are chosen, and how the company stays small enough to learn.

Take things out

Too many parts, too many steps, too many trades. Assemblies that cannot be opened. Choices made because that is how houses are usually done. Just Haus starts by asking what can leave. Fewer things to buy, handle, install, maintain, and replace.

Buildings are experiments

A project is a home and a test at the same time. Structure, air, interiors, energy, the order of the work: several questions run at once. It is like a dozen, on a busy day. What survives is what the next building gets to keep.

The next one inherits the lesson

Just Haus Alpha is the first building, not the whole practice. What it teaches is meant to change whatever comes after. That is the system: repeated experiments, each one feeding the next.

Warm, on purpose

Minimal is not bare for its own sake. The architecture can stay quiet. Materials, daylight, seasons, and the life in the rooms do the rest. Wood that weathers is welcome. Sterile is not the goal.

Change it without demolishing it

Houses get trapped by finishes that have to be destroyed before anyone can see the wall. Where the work allows it, panels and surfaces should come off. Repair and rearrangement are part of the design, not a future renovation.

A real winter

The place is the White Mountains. Snow, moisture, and a long heating season set the problems. Energy is a set of tradeoffs, not a contest for a bigger number. This site does not publish performance figures.

Technology that gets out of the way

Systems should make the building simpler to live with. If a piece of equipment needs its own instruction manual to justify itself, it has probably missed the point.

Failure is part of the record

Some lessons arrive sideways. Foam that winds up in the yard. A detail that was fine until the weather showed up. Those are not side stories. They are evidence. The experiments page is where that kind of note belongs, without pretending every test worked.
